Sustainable graphic design is an eco-conscious approach to creating visual content that minimizes environmental impact.

It involves thoughtful choices in materials, energy use, and production processes, aiming to reduce waste, carbon emissions, and resource consumption. By prioritizing long-lasting, efficient designs and collaborating with responsible suppliers, sustainable graphic design balances aesthetics with environmental stewardship, helping to create a more sustainable future.

Though there is never going to be such a thing as ‘Green Graphic Design’ there are steps that can be made to reduce the impact of doing what I love (designing!)

Below are some changes I have made in my daily graphic design business plus some tips on how you can start to reduce your digital footprint too!

HOW HAVE I IMPLEMENTED MORE GREEN DESIGN PRACTICES?

Digital Business Cards

Choosing to move away from traditional means of self-promotion and business management, I let go of the notion of needing physical business cards to have credibility and get new clients by moving to a digital platform. Apps such as Blinq make it super easy to share your details without the need for printing!

Energy and Materials Usage

Turning my computer off at the end of each day has become second nature. To take quick notes during the day I always have a stash of used notebooks handy that still have some spare pages in them, only throwing them away when every last page is used up. Also, the hardware I use for work is up to date and the highest quality to ensure longevity.

Web Optimisation

Websites are hosted on servers located in data centers, which require vast amounts of electricity to operate. These data centers must run continuously and use energy for both the servers themselves and for cooling systems to prevent overheating.

Keeping my website optimised with smaller file sizes means less loading time and less energy consumption when users are on my site.

PRO TIP! An easy way to check a websites energy usage is to simply hold your mouse over the website tab in your browser. Within seconds a box will appear that has the memory usage GB of that website!

Print on Demand

I used to think to be a successful and fulfilled designer meant having a shop and selling prints and other products with my designs. Since then I have realised success looks more like stripping things back and letting my environmental consciousness lead the way. I no longer have a shop on my website, and if there is a genuine need for a print or product, I will make it only for that specific requirement.

Sustainable Sourcing

When I do need to print a t-shirt for a client or some posters, I always use green printing materials and providers that deliver the products in biodegradable packaging. I look for printers who can ship straight to the customer from their warehouse to minimise the parcel’s carbon output.

Web Hosting

I am in the process of transferring my web hosting over to GreenGeeks. This is a brilliant company to align with as an online business of any kind, I highly recommend it! Every aspect of their hosting platform is built to be as energy efficient as possible. For very amperage they pull from the grid, they match 3 times that in the form of renewable energy via Bonneville Environmental Foundation and plant one tree for every hosting account provisioned!

Social Impact

There is so much power and joy in using our passion and skills for good. For the last two years I have made Earth Day motion graphics to promote their wonderful organisation. A lot of my designs are inspired by and representative of nature and I will continue to engage in more climate-orientated action through my deigns as it is a brilliant platform to use for good.

Final Note

There is a lot of information out there and not all of it is what it first seems. EG: recycled paper! The best way to make informed decisions to a greener workflow and business is to spend the time learning and trying new things.

What we do will never unfortunately be completely ‘green’ but if a bunch of us all make a few small steps, that will mean something :)
